Based on surface condition:
1. Unfinished particleboard: Sanded particleboard; Unsanded particleboard.

2. Finished particleboard: Impregnated paper-finished particleboard; Decorative laminate-finished particleboard; Veneer-finished particleboard; Surface-coated particleboard; PVC-finished particleboard, etc.

Particleboard is also classified by density: low density (0.25–0.45 g/cm³), medium density (0.45–0.60 g/cm³), and high density (0.60–1.3 g/cm³), but most commonly produced particleboard has a density of 0.60–0.70 g/cm³. Particleboard is classified into three types according to its structure: single-layer, three-layer (including multi-layer), and gradient. It is also classified by water resistance into indoor and outdoor water-resistant types. Based on the arrangement of the wood chips within the board, it can be either oriented or random. In addition, there are various particleboards made from non-wood materials such as cotton stalks, hemp stalks, bagasse, and rice husks, as well as cement-bonded wood fiberboard and cement particleboard made with inorganic adhesives. Particleboard comes in various specifications, with thicknesses ranging from 1.6 mm to 75 mm, with 19 mm as the standard thickness. When evaluating the quality of particleboard, commonly considered physical properties include density, moisture content, water absorption, and thickness expansion rate; mechanical properties include static bending strength, tensile strength perpendicular to the board surface (internal bond strength), nail-holding force, modulus of elasticity, and modulus of rigidity; and processing properties include machinability, gluing properties, and paintability. For special-purpose particleboard, electrical, acoustic, thermal, corrosion-resistant, fire-resistant, and flame-retardant properties must also be considered according to the specific application.
