Judging the Quality of Particleboard

Particleboard is a type of engineered wood product made by hot-pressing wood chips with glue. Also known as chipboard, it is primarily used in furniture manufacturing and interior decoration, with over 80% of its applications in custom furniture.

 

1. From an appearance perspective, examine the size and shape of the wood chips in the center of the cross-section. The ideal length is 5-10mm. Too long chips result in a loose structure, while too short chips have poor resistance to deformation and fail to meet static bending strength standards.

 

2. The moisture resistance of engineered wood products depends on their density and moisture-proofing agents. Even the best moisture resistance is useless if the board is soaked in water. Moisture resistance refers to resistance to moisture, not water resistance. Therefore, this distinction must be made during use. In northern regions, including North China, Northwest China, and Northeast China, the moisture content of the boards should generally be controlled between 8-10%. In southern regions, including coastal areas, it should be controlled between 9-14%. Otherwise, the boards are prone to moisture absorption and deformation.

 

3. Regarding surface flatness and smoothness, most boards are polished with around 200# sandpaper at the factory. Generally, a finer finish is better, but in some cases, such as when bonding fireproof boards, a finer finish can hinder glue application.
