China's particleboard production has experienced a cyclical process, rising in the 1980s, declining in the 1990s, and then rising again in 2000. After being abandoned by the market due to poor quality and other reasons, many particleboard companies learned from their mistakes, introduced advanced foreign production lines, and improved their processes. As a result, the quality of Chinese particleboard improved significantly, and it regained market acceptance. Many furniture manufacturers began using particleboard as a raw material again. Furthermore, oriented strand board (OSB) gradually gained consumer acceptance. Therefore, the demand for particleboard in China has been increasing year by year. With the increasing domestic and international demand for particleboard, and the government's preferential policies encouraging the development of the engineered wood products industry, favorable conditions have been created for the development of the particleboard industry.

From January to December 2006, China's large-scale particleboard manufacturing enterprises achieved a total industrial output value of RMB 7,072,059 thousand, an increase of 26.10% year-on-year; total product sales revenue of RMB 6,666,291 thousand, an increase of 24.80% year-on-year; and total profits of RMB 136,464 thousand, a decrease of 25.30% year-on-year.

From January to November 2007, China's large-scale particleboard manufacturing enterprises achieved a total industrial output value of RMB 9,643,562 thousand, an increase of 58.17% year-on-year; total product sales revenue of RMB 8,937,280 thousand, an increase of 59.41% year-on-year; and total profits of RMB 409,659 thousand, an increase of 225.92% year-on-year.

China's particleboard industry has developed rapidly, but it generally suffers from small-scale operations, outdated equipment, and technology. Furthermore, many companies neglect product quality, using bark and dust from MDF production as raw materials. Consequently, Chinese-made particleboard is generally of poor quality and often suffers from serious formaldehyde exceeding standards.

Under these circumstances, the particleboard industry must rapidly improve product quality and reduce costs to actively participate in market competition, as the market potential remains enormous. Besides ensuring raw material supply and improving product quality, companies must increase technological innovation, vigorously recycle waste wood, and achieve a circular economy. Efforts should be made to develop new uses for particleboard, especially increasing research on oriented strand board (OSB) and promoting its applications. To improve particleboard quality, reduce costs, and enhance R&D capabilities, it is essential to increase the scale of projects and reorganize small particleboard plants to achieve economies of scale.

China's per capita consumption of particleboard is still relatively low, but as China progresses towards building a moderately prosperous society, the demand for engineered wood products continues to increase. The 280 billion yuan investment in the Beijing Olympics, the over 25 billion yuan direct investment in the Shanghai World Expo, and the over one trillion yuan in fixed asset investment in urban public facilities during the 11th Five-Year Plan period have all created opportunities for the development of China's particleboard industry. Therefore, it is expected that China's particleboard consumption will increase year by year.
